Alton Towers Half Marathon 2023

Alton Towers Half Marathon 2023

Posted 12th November 2023

On Sunday 12th November, over 40 runners ran the Alton Towers Half Marathon to raise monies for the 'Care Leavers: Kitchen Comfort' campaign. Despite the pouring rain the runners completed the course to support young people, raising over £9000. Two young people, Kieran and Paris, who had been supported by NHP ran in support of their community of care leavers and were delighted to have run their first half marathon.

Reconomy, a leading waste management/recycling company and corporate supporter of NHP also took part in the race and provided sponsorship to support NHP in their first major fundraising event.

"We believe that every young care leaver, like Kieran and Paris, deserves the chance to have a warm, welcoming home of their own." said Mark Warr, Chief Executive at NHP. "Access to fridges, cookers and washing machines is a fundamental part of that journey. Our 'Care Leavers: Kitchen Comfort' campaign aims to bridge this gap and ensure that care leavers are not burdened by unnecessary challenges as they start this new chapter of their lives. We are so lucky to have the support of all of our runners, and Reconomy who have been such valuable partners in terms of their support."

We are extremely grateful for each and every runner, supporter and spectator - Thank You!

EXIT Study: Toolkit launched!
EXIT Study: Toolkit launched!

Care leavers are set to benefit from a new innovation toolkit designed by Warwick Business School. The Implementation Toolkit helps local authorities, care homes, charities and organisations working in the care sector to implement new ideas that will improve their service without getting stuck with ‘pilotitis’ – ie never seeing the light of day after numerous trials. It has been produced as part of a four-year research project in collaboration with the Care Leavers Association alongside charities Barnardo’s and the National House Project. So many innovative ideas wither away because of a lack of resource or support, while young people leaving care face the brutal reality of a system that leaves them two and a half times more likely to become a young parent; four times more likely to experience mental health issues; and less likely to achieve academically in school, attend higher education, or be in employment. Graeme Currie, Professor of Public Management said: “Young people leaving care face an extremely difficult transition and are often dealing with the trauma of a desperately challenging childhood.

IMPACT – Improving Adult Social Care Together

IMPACT’s objectives fitted well with those of NHP and what we wanted to achieve organisationally in order to provide a positive environment for young care experienced adults to feel supported and thrive. On this basis we put in a bid to be an IMPACT Demonstrator Site, suggesting that we have Coventry and Fife LHPs as areas of focus to enable us to look at frameworks for both England and Scotland. Our bid was successful, and we look forward to starting this work in September which will run until September 2025.
